What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis (brittle bones) occurs when bones become thin and therefore more prone to fractures (breaks). The onset is gradual and there may be no signs until the bones become so weak that they fracture. The most common fracture sites are wrists, hips and the spine.

Osteoporosis affects around 1 in 3 women and 1 in 12 men.

What are the risk factors?

bulletPremature menopause (under the age of 45)
bulletHysterectomy (under 45)
bulletOophorectomy (removal of the ovaries) under the age of 45
bulletProlonged amenorrhoea (no periods) for more than 6 months
bulletProlonged past or current use of steroids - (total dose of 1g or >7.5mg for 6 months)
bulletAnorexia nervosa
bulletMalabsorption problems eg coeliac disease
bulletHyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
bulletHyperparathyroidism
bulletRheumatoid Arthritis
bulletRenal dialysis/transplant
bulletSpontaneous or low impact fracture of: Wrist, hip or spine
bulletStrong family history of osteoporosis
bulletCushing's syndrome

If you have had any of the above then you have an increased risk of having osteoporosis.

What can be done?

Once diagnosed by a bone density scan, steps can be taken to slow down or reverse bone loss. Apart from diet and lifestyle changes, there are various treatments in the form of tablets, depending on the severity of the problem.

Where can I be tested?

Availability of scanners varies throughout the UK. Your GP may be able to refer you for a scan if he feels it is necessary.
