Osteoscan is the new bone-scanning (Dexa Scanner)
service based in Crawley.
Osteoporosis (brittle bones) occurs when bones become thin and therefore
more prone to fractures (breaks). The onset is gradual and there may be no
signs until the bones become so weak that they fracture. The most common
fracture sites are wrists, hips and the spine.
Osteoporosis affects around 1 in 3 women and 1 in 12 men.
Premature menopause (under the age of 45)
Hysterectomy (under 45)
Oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries) under the age of 45
Prolonged amenorrhoea (no periods) for more than 6 months
| Prolonged past or current use of steroids - (total dose
of 1g or >7.5mg for 6 months) |
Anorexia nervosa
Malabsorption problems eg coeliac disease
Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
Hyperparathyroidism
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Renal dialysis/transplant
Spontaneous or low impact fracture of: Wrist, hip or spine
Strong family history of osteoporosis
Cushing's syndrome
If you have had any of the above then you have
an increased risk of having osteoporosis.
Once diagnosed by a bone density scan, steps can be taken to slow down
or reverse bone loss. Apart from diet and lifestyle changes, there are various
treatments in the form of tablets, depending on the severity of the problem.
Availability of scanners varies throughout the UK. Your GP may be able
to refer you for a scan if he feels it is necessary.
Here in Crawley, Dr Royds-Jones & Partners offers a Dexa scanning
service (DTX 200) which is available to the local community both on the NHS
